I'd say you were using that big vocabulary for this post..lol.

I understood the whole thing, but I don't use the words myself. One reason is that, even though I know the meanings of lots of words, I don't pronounce them correctly. I do look them up, but my memory is awful and I just can't remember some. My husband often has to help me with a word.

Now, if you just said something without a sentence to back it up, I might not understand, but with the sentence most words are easy to figure out.

Cool post here!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-740968861330306110.post-17375574052811112062007-10-26T21:08:00.000-04:002007-10-26T21:08:00.000-04:00The way I see it, the relative acceleration of tim...The way I see it, the relative acceleration of time is a matter of ratios. I believe that one's lifetime is, in that person's perception, "forever".

Thus, when a person is, say, 5 years old, a single year represents 20% of forever. That's a huge proportion!

By age ten, a year is 10% of forever; not so formidable to get one's mind around, but still a very long time. By the time our subject reaches 25, a year is a very short 4% of forever. Do the rest of the math yourself (BEG).

I have also heard our perception of time compared to playing an old vinyl phonograph record (and if you're old enough to remember those, you're somewhere in the 2% to 3% category!). The outside edge of the record seems to be moving slowly, enough to read something along the edge. However, the label at the center of the record is spinning so fast you can't read the name of the song! Still, the record spins at 33 1/3 (or 45, or if you're hurtling toward 1%, 78!) Among those thoughts are several pertaining to your post. Amazing how things come full circle....

I agree fully with your view that one may certainly learn from reading fiction. Take any one of Michael Crichton's novels, for example. Crichton thoroughly researches his subject matter, and presents a tremendous amount of factual material for his fictional characters (and his readers!) to deal with.

Another prime example is Dan Brown's fabulously popular (some would say infamous) The DaVinci Code. Brown imparts a deluge of factual information: The Louvre, DaVinci, the Knights Templar, the various theories surrounding the Holy Grail, London, Sir Issac Newton, etc. ad infinitum. Plenty to learn there, even if (maybe especially if!) you disagree with the theories expounded.

You also correctly point out the potential to improve one's vocabulary. In one of my absolute favorite movies, The Remains of the Day, the character of Mr. Stevens makes exactly that point during a conversation. It rang a chord with me then, and does to this day. I read, therefore I converse.

I would add one thing to your paragraph on gaining knowledge through discourse with others. If you read your Bible, you will find this in the Book of Proverbs (but don't ask me to quote chapter & verse....look it up yourself!): As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Cogitate on that a while! There are several facets to be examined.

Finally, I must heartily agree with your assertion that intelligence resides not only in the ability to obtain and retain facts, but in the ability to also apply said knowledge. Well said!

Well, I'm off to see if the Red Sox can continue their winning ways against Colorado (Go Red Sox!!).davidmumperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04131412959604932453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-740968861330306110.post-13938528901975944902007-10-25T20:09:00.000-04:002007-10-25T20:09:00.000-04:00What kind of gaming stuff? What kind of gaming stuff?davidmumperhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04131412959604932453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-740968861330306110.post-44525575813962901462007-10-21T21:19:00.000-04:002007-10-21T21:19:00.000-04:00nice website I can tell that you have really put a...nice website I can tell that you have really put alot of work into itAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-740968861330306110.post-78739870305881955482007-10-19T08:29:00.000-04:002007-10-19T08:29:00.000-04:00Hi GeorgeIt looks great keep up the good work.Good...Hi George
It looks great keep up the good work.Good luck to you.
Dan&Joaneagle91101https://www.blogger.com/profile/03824988807984056116noreply@blogger.com
