Time go fast!

I know that time is relative but as I ingress middle age, it seems to accelerate.
Since I had my daughter when I was forty-three I will be in my sixties when she graduates. Her friends will come up to her at the graduation ceremony and ask if I am her grandpa!
I don't look forward to that nor do I relish getting older. Life does indeed go on but I hope it slows down to the point where I can smell the roses and watch my daughter grow to a productive member of society.

  1. The way I see it, the relative acceleration of time is a matter of ratios. I believe that one's lifetime is, in that person's perception, "forever".

Thus, when a person is, say, 5 years old, a single year represents 20% of forever. That's a huge proportion!

By age ten, a year is 10% of forever; not so formidable to get one's mind around, but still a very long time. By the time our subject reaches 25, a year is a very short 4% of forever. Do the rest of the math yourself (BEG).

I have also heard our perception of time compared to playing an old vinyl phonograph record (and if you're old enough to remember those, you're somewhere in the 2% to 3% category!). The outside edge of the record seems to be moving slowly, enough to read something along the edge. However, the label at the center of the record is spinning so fast you can't read the name of the song! Still, the record spins at 33 1/3 (or 45, or if you're hurtling toward 1%, 78!) RPM.
